One of the best things about streaming giants like Netflix is how they’ve allowed audiences around the entire world a platform to view and appreciate the filmmaking talent embedded in diverse cultures everywhere. From the captivating storylines of Korean dramas to the artistry and innovation of French films, Netflix has a plethora of content.

However, in recent years, films from Hispanic countries have been growing in both preference and numbers, particularly on Netflix. I’ve been binge-watching Spanish content from all genres for a while now, but the one that resonated with me the most is romance. Yes, romance, I said what I said!

I have particularly found Spanish romantic movies to beautifully blend emotional depth and compelling storytelling, resulting in masterpieces that can captivate anyone from the start till the end. Whether it’s a teen romance, an emotional rollercoaster, or a comedy with romantic elements, Netflix has a Spanish film that will have you hooked.

1.      A Través de mi Ventana (Through My Window)

  • Year: 2022
  • Length: 1h 56m
  • Country of Origin: Spain

Summary: The movie centers on a teenager Raquel, and her attractive yet mysterious neighbor, Ares, whom Raquel has madly fallen for. How madly? Just enough to watch him from her window every day! Despite having never spoken to each other, she makes it her mission to have him also fall head over heels for her. The film is narrated by Raquel and shows the journey of her and Ares’s relationship blossoming.

Why It’s Great: At first, I thought this would be just like any other teen romance movie, with a good-girl-meets-bad-boy kind of story. However, the intense passion and chemistry between the characters, paired with the multiple laughs and emotional ups and downs, had me hooked. I also loved how the movie explores the impact of family pressures and societal class on an individual’s love life and how the strength of that love can help overcome them all.

2.      Ahí te Encargo (You Got This)

  • Year: 2020
  • Length: 1h 51m
  • Country of Origin: Mexico

Summary: The film centers around a childless Mexican couple, Alejandro and Cecilia. Alejandro is a family-oriented man who wants children, whereas Cecilia is a career-oriented woman who has been offered the role of partner at her firm, making her uninterested in having kids. This causes rifts among the couple. However, one day, fate brings a stranger’s child into their lives, and from there, the film explores their challenges in navigating this sudden change.

Why It’s Great: The film has a relatable story that perfectly balances humor with a range of important themes and societal considerations. In addition to the funny, lighthearted moments, the film touches on female empowerment in the form of Cecilia breaking barriers as a female executive, and explores a challenge prevailing among most modern couples – the ongoing battle between career ambitions and starting a family.

I like how the film explores both sides of the equation without turning either party into a negative one and emphasizing how communication is what it is all about in relationships.

3.      Hasta que nos volvamos a Encontrar (Without Saying Goodbye)

  • Year: 2022
  • Length: 1h 36m
  • Countries of Origin: Spain and Peru

Summary: The film focuses on two worlds colliding. Salvador, a workaholic architect from Miami, works for his father’s hotel conglomerate, the largest in Spain. He arrives in Cusco to turn a local hostel into an up-to-date resort, offering the hostel’s owner a large amount of money, which she is hesitant to accept. His key breaks and fate introduces him to the hotel owner’s free-spirited niece, Ariana, who finds joy in simple things. From there, the film explores how Salvador and Ariana’s worlds, thoughts, and personalities collide and rub off on each other.

Why It’s Great: I loved that the film, despite following an age-old storyline, manages to add funny and lighthearted moments to it. The film also has amazing chemistry between the main characters and to watch their love journey unfold in the breathtaking landscapes and vibrant culture of Peru makes this film a decent romantic watch. I loved how the film shares a journey of self-discovery by identifying the simple and little things that make life worth living, yet keeps it realistic by identifying how different lives may lead to a different direction.
